Since EncouraGYM
first opened we have been active participants in our
community. We have appeared on morning news
programs, evening newscasts, radio programs, newspapers
and festivials.
Below are just two of the newspaper
articles which have discussed our EncouraPLAY program. |

Bringing Up Baby - Indianapolis Star |

EncouraGYM packs loads
of interaction into one-hour classes. Each session
includes time for “free play,” or a chance to cut loose on
the school’s indoor playground. The landscape of brightly
colored cubes, spheres, tunnels and slides is heavily
cushioned for safety. “Popping bubbles helps develop
visual tracking, eye-hand coordination and fine motor
skills,” director of curriculum Chris Siler explained
through the dizzying barrage floating from a bubble
machine. |

The idea is to give
babies a lot of stimulation, which is important to healthy
brain development, said Jill Bracken-Emerson, who co-owns
EncouraGYM with her husband JR Emerson. Looking for ways
to enhance their own children’s development and not
finding what they wanted locally, they soon found
themselves establishing the business to help other
parents.
Amy Thompson-Hill is a
Northside stay-at-home mom who brings 9-month-old son,
Alexander, to class religiously. He’s one of the school’s
star pupils, a bold conqueror of egg tunnels, and
enthusiastic bubble popper. Thomspon-Hill is convinced
the class is making a difference. “He’s crawling early
and getting along well with other children,” she said.
“I’m sure it’s working.”

According to the
National Association for Sport and Physical Education,
allowing babies to roam, crawl, push, pull and climb
creates body awareness that “hooks’ the brain to the
muscles.
“We want them to have
fun with movement and exercise,” said Barb Weaver, owner.
“Kids this age need to work on their fine motor skills and
gross motor skills development, and it’s a fun way for
them to try different activities outside the home.”
Classes provide stations for children to climb up and
down, push backward and forward, and has opportunities for
running, standing, and crawling.
The bubble station
delights babies who try to catch and pop bubbles with
their hands and fingers, using fine motor skills. At the
parachute station, babies climb in and out of the
parachute lifted by parents—using the children’s gross
motor skills, such as arm and leg movements. The story
time station teaches listening skills and fine motor
movements with puppets and repetitious play. |
